What Is Gait Analysis?

Gait Analysis is a clinical movement assessment that examines how you walk, including foot placement, stride pattern, balance, and joint motion. A practitioner observes your walking pattern and may compare movement on each side of the body. The findings can guide therapeutic exercise planning when walking mechanics relate to pain, weakness, or limited control.

Key Takeaways About Gait Analysis

  • Walking patterns reveal more than foot position alone.
  • Observations can shape targeted therapeutic exercises.
  • Gait Analysis is not the same as a posture check.

How Gait Analysis Works

Gait Analysis works by examining the repeated phases of walking from one step to the next. A practitioner watches how the feet contact the ground, how the knees and hips move, and how the trunk responds. The review can also compare movement on the left and right sides.

Observation may take place while you walk at a natural pace or perform a related movement. The practitioner looks for changes in balance, timing, joint control, and weight transfer. Therapeutic Exercise may then address a movement limit that affects walking, while Range of Motion findings can help explain why a joint moves differently during a step. Gait Analysis describes movement; it does not identify every possible cause of pain.

From the Arrowhead Clinic - Lithia Springs team

When we use Gait Analysis, we watch how each part of the body contributes to walking. Our team connects those observations with therapeutic exercise choices, such as balance work or controlled strengthening. We focus on movement that can be practiced clearly and safely within the person’s plan.

Gait Analysis in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person reports discomfort after walking and shows uneven weight transfer during a movement review. Therapeutic Exercise may focus on controlled balance and leg stability to address the movement pattern observed during walking.
